Partner of the Month: David C. Smith
We welcomed David Smith into the SVP partnership a year and a half ago, and since then he’s been all-in. He got his feet wet participating on Investment teams and a project using Lean process improvement principles to improve SVP’s investment process. David then dove into planning and design work for the Preschool Success Project and Impact Investing. He has rolled-up his sleeves and continues to be deeply involved in both of these efforts. David brings confidence and depth of expertise to any project, while remaining humble and thoughtful. He pushes towards action and always follows through. It’s amazing how much he’s done during his time with the partnership. David is a technology executive and father of two. He has been in executive positions in technology for many years and specializes in building organizations. He’s interested in giving back to the community and participating in work that has meaning.
Q: What drove you to join SVP?
I was looking for an organization where I could be more involved than simply writing a check. The venture philanthropy model really appeals to both my entrepreneurial spirit and desire to do more in the community.
Q: What has been most rewarding for you thus far?
The most rewarding thing has been interacting with the incredible organizations in the Portland area that SVP is engaged with. The new experiences and applying my skills to new areas has been great.
Q: Have you had any “aha” moments?
My “aha” moment came while working on the impact investment team and realizing the incredible opportunity we have to really affect change in the Portland area by developing a new funding option for child care providers that has been shown to be successful in other parts of the country.
Q: What do you like to do in your free time?
Spending time with my family and traveling with my wife.
