Encore Fellows Spotlight: Dwayne Canfield

Dwayne grew up in a rural Washington town dominated by timber and agriculture, with a twin brother and much family around. He left the small town to attend Portland State University, where he studied electrical engineering.

Dwayne joined Intel in 1988 in a technical role, but quickly gravitated to marketing and business, and cemented that focus by getting his MBA from the University of Oregon in 1998. He has managed project, products, and businesses in many segments of high tech, and loves the opportunity to apply innovation and entrepreneurship to the challenges. He is happiest at work when there's plenty to learn, the path forward isn't clear, and there's an enthusiastic team aligned to find the way. He spent six years in Shanghai, China, pathfinding new product opportunities for the emerging markets, and fell in love with living and working in a different culture.

For his Fellowship, Dwayne will be working with Ecotrust on an exploratory project for 2018 to define its strategy for spurring “regenerative economies” in the Pacific Northwest and beyond. For the RegenEcon project Dwayne will assess the ideas and people working on regenerative/new/moral economy frameworks to illuminate the context for Ecotrust's work and assess the challenge of metrics and measurement of whole systems, especially the environmental and equity dimensions. In addition, Dwayne will be working with Ecotrust on a revitalization of its fisheries program that has begun recently. Its goal is to build a fisheries program that is able to transform seafood markets and bolster values-based fishing businesses in the Pacific Northwest in a manner that strengthens local communities, supports long-term ecological integrity, contributes to robust economies and thriving local food systems. While new fisheries staff are onboard, the team is limited in its size and will benefit from the support of Dwayne who is not as steeped in fisheries and can bring fresh eyes to the process.Dwayne has three kids from ages 15 to 23 who challenge and impress him, and is married to his partner-in-crime Carrie-Ann, who he intends to keep exploring rivers, trails, and the world with for many years to come.
