Encore Fellows Program

Encore Fellowships match seasoned professionals with social-impact organizations to boost nonprofit capacity, build strong multigenerational teams, and give people seeking encore careers an introduction to the nonprofit sector.

SVP Portland is proud to host the Encore Fellows program for Oregon. Fellows are matched with projects at local nonprofits where their professional expertise helps organizations fulfill their missions.

Fellows share that they develop a passion for working in a mission-based organization and enjoy having a positive impact in the community.

“My experience has been fantastic! My Fellowship provided a great transition from full employment to retirement, giving structure to my day. I learned some great skills that had been on my list to explore.”

- Fran Hanchek - Encore Fellow at Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum (WAAAM)

  • Encore Fellows bring a wealth of professional — often corporate — expertise to help advance a nonprofit’s mission through a high-impact Fellowships of 1000 hours. Fellows provide fresh perspective to help an organization reach a new level of performance. They typically serve an organization 20 hours per week for 12 months, bringing expertise in one or more areas, such as:

    • Management

    • Human resources

    • Finance

    • Strategic planning

    • Project and program management

    • Information technology

    • Marketing

We handle the matching process, which includes rigorous screening, and provide coaching and resources — helping host organizations establish mentorship and intergenerational collaboration between the Fellows and other staff.

The financial cost of sponsored Encore Fellows is fully covered. Alternatively, the $30,000 total cost can be self-funded by organizations via grants/donations (see Sponsor an Encore Fellow).

If you’re curious about becoming a work host or have further questions, please contact our team.

  • Are you a nonprofit that can self-fund an Encore Fellow via grants or donations? If so, we can help you find an open market Encore Fellows who will apply their professional experience to 1000 hours of work for your organization, typically part-time for one year. Host organizations cover the $25,000 stipend for the Fellow and $5,000 program fee, and we help craft the position description.

The Benefits for the host organization:

    • Encore Fellows are a cost-effective solution for skilled talent. They bring decades of work experience, a strong sense of responsibility, and the ability to plan and complete projects.

    • Encore Fellows can work remotely, creating a large pool of experienced, available talent from which to choose.

    • Encore Fellows bring new perspectives, often adding age diversity to their teams, along with the opportunity for co-mentoring.

    • Encore Fellows can help organizations pilot a proposed permanent position, fill capacity-building roles, and launch or complete strategic projects.

If you’re interested in sponsoring an Encore Fellow through the open market or have further questions, please contact Ursula Garcia.

  • We match Encore Fellows with social impact organizations that need their skills and experience. Fellows bring years of experience in finance, business development, operations, marketing, communications, human resources, information technology, crisis management, and more.

    The Benefits for Encore Fellows:

    • Encore Fellows have the chance to apply what they know to support critical mission-driven organizations.

    • Encore Fellowships offer people seeking to transition to social-purpose work the chance to learn about the sector and develop contacts and resources that can lead to meaningful second acts.

    • Encore Fellows have the chance to work on multigenerational teams, keeping skills current and learning new ones.

    • Encore Fellows receive a $25,000 stipend for 1000 hours of work, typically part-time for one year.
